LFCDS has been recognized as a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.
The Faculty has received recognition from the Golden Apple Foundation, with four of its members receiving recognition as Golden Apple finalists and one recieving the Golden Apple Award. The Golden Apple Award is the most prestigious award for excellence in teaching in the Chicago area.
LFCDS is recognized as a Center for Excellence in English/Language Arts by the National Council of Teachers of English. The NCTE has also cited the LFCDS literary magazine, Dimensions, as an example of excellence.
In the past ten years of participation, four eighth grade students have received the prestigious "Promising Young Writers Award" from the National Council of Teachers of English.
LFCDS math teams consistently place in the top 25 of 500 schools competing statewide. The Lower School Mathematics & Science Chair was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
The median quantitative and verbal scores in grade 8 are at or above the 85th percentile nationally.
Over the last five years, seven students have won Chicago Chapter, Midwest Regional and National awards at Levels 1 and 2 of the National French Contest, several others have received honorable mention.
Over 80% of band students participating in solo/ensemble competitions receive a "1", the highest rating. LFCDS has been represented at the IMEA honor band festival, competing against top student musicians from northeastern Illinois.
There have been multiple league championships in volleyball, field hockey, basketball and soccer.
