Developing a solid foundation
The Lower School promotes a warm, trusting atmosphere that fosters a respectful community built on cooperation, acceptance and empathy. Although the atmosphere is informal, expectations are clearly defined as children develop a solid foundation in language arts and math, and acquire a thorough familiarity with social studies, science, computer science, foreign language, information literacy, music, drama and studio art. Self-control and responsibility are keys to each child's success and to the enjoyment of learning.
Opening the doors to exploration and discovery
Children are taught to develop higher-level thinking and problem solving skills. To further ensure a well-balanced academic and social experience, there is a balance of partner, small group and whole group experiences. Each homeroom is comprised of children possessing different interests and abilities. When appropriate students are placed in groups that may work at an accelerated pace.
Many opportunities for social interaction
The school believes that children flourish in rich learning environments where there is close interaction with faculty members and other children. Integrated units of study encourage students to develop their intellectual curiosity and individual expression.
A smooth transition from home to school
The School challenges its students but also supports them in meeting those challenges. A commitment to the individual is reflected through small class sizes and smaller group instruction based on each child's particular needs, abilities and interests. The Lower School's resources are further enhanced by state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge technology, a new library, a team of learning development teachers, and Language Arts/Social Studies and Math/Science Chairs.
