The English/Language Arts Program at Lake Forest Country Day School develops a well-prepared, knowledgeable, and intellectually curious student body. We develop language skills within a well-balanced, multi-strand curriculum and engender enthusiasm and appreciation for fine literature and writing. We foster students’ insight into the human experience by emphasizing the power of language as a means of communication, as a defining feature of culture, and as a primary instrument of thought. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing are complex, interwoven processes that students acquire as they engage in meaningful language use. Students use these communication skills for problem solving, critical and creative thinking, and decision-making. Regular and extensive reading and writing prepare maturing citizens of a democratic society to function effectively in the world of work and to realize personal fulfillment. Students use oral and written language to achieve self-expression, to cultivate a sense of ethical responsibility, and to successfully interact with others.

Language development occurs in stages and is unique to each individual, so we strive for each child to reach his or her own individual potential for mastery. We acknowledge the importance of accountability and assessment and engage in ongoing evaluation of student progress. Students at Lake Forest Country Day School learn to use language clearly, strategically, critically, and creatively along a rigorous continuum, which reflects an understanding of the educational needs of each child.

Within a common curriculum teachers are afforded the opportunity for informed creativity and autonomy within the classroom. Through professional development and reflection, we are aware of and apply appropriate new teaching methods while maintaining those methods that have proved successful over a period of time.
