A Message from The Head of School

Dear Lake Forest Country Day School Community,

Our annual Veterans Day Assembly is one of the most meaningful traditions at Lake Forest Country Day School, bringing together students, faculty, families, veterans, and community members to honor service, sacrifice, and citizenship. Through music, reflection, storytelling, and gratitude, the program reinforces the values that are central to our mission and vision as a school.

This year, we were honored to welcome CAPT Mary Pohanka, whose distinguished career in the United States Navy provided students with powerful lessons about leadership and service. Her message encouraged our students to recognize that every member of a team matters, that service is measured by the impact we have on others, and that making a difference often begins simply by showing up.

A particularly moving part of the program came from three members of the Class of 2027. Isabella Taylor-McLaughlin shared reflections on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Madelyn Kohl spoke about the World War II Memorial, and Lucas McKeon reflected on Arlington National Cemetery. Each student brought thoughtful perspective to these national places of remembrance, helping our community better understand the significance of honoring those who have served and sacrificed. These topics held special personal meaning for each student, adding authenticity and depth to their presentations.

The assembly also highlighted an important connection between military service and education. Veterans dedicate themselves to protecting the freedoms that sustain our democracy, while educators dedicate themselves to preparing the next generation to preserve and strengthen those freedoms. Both professions are rooted in service, sacrifice, and a commitment to something larger than oneself. As educators, we are privileged to help students develop the character, compassion, and sense of responsibility that will enable them to contribute meaningfully to their communities and our nation. This shared commitment to serving others sits at the heart of both callings.

Together, these student reflections, the participation of McKinlock Post 264 of The American Legion, and the lessons shared by CAPT Mary Pohanka brought to life our vision of empowering students to emerge as confident, compassionate learners who are prepared to lead, serve, and shape what comes next. It was a powerful reminder that honoring veterans is not only about remembering the past but also about inspiring the next generation to live lives of purpose, gratitude, and service.

Warm regards,

John Melton
