School Nurse

The tasks, duties, and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all health-related concerns at LFCDS
  • Provide direct nursing care to ill or injured students during the school day
  • Perform nursing assessments and take appropriate steps to address student health needs
  • Track student illness, notify appropriate parties of infectious diseases, and provide health updates to the community
  • Administer medications and manage chronic illness in coordination with individually developed care plans
  • Maintain the health office in clean, orderly, and safe condition with particular attention to confidential information, inventory management, and safe disposal procedures
  • Manage school health records following Illinois School Student Records Act
  • Maintain organized and up-to-date medical health exams and immunization records
  • Ensure collection of student health documentation for incoming new students
  • Performs and/or coordinates mandated screening procedures for vision and hearing (requires state credentials as a screener)
  • Prepare first-aid kits, medications, and health paperwork for field trips
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings and complete continuing education requirements for licensure.
Professional and Personal Qualifications
  • Compassionate, warm, and caring demeanor with the ability to listen and be present
  • Enjoy working in a school community with children
  • Demonstrated clinical competency in school nursing practices
  • The School Nurse must have an active Illinois license as a registered nurse/nurse practitioner
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited college or university
  • Must be willing to work with individuals who could potentially be infected with infectious illnesses
  • Able to handle managing multiple priorities and the ability to change course when unanticipated events arise
  • Computer literate with database experience; familiarity with Google and Microsoft Office Workspaces is desirable
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate with children, families, and faculty
  • Ability to identify and problem solve promptly, employing empathy when dealing with emotional issues
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
